USD Dakota Dome Held in the climate-controlled Dakota Dome on the University of South Dakota campus, Quad State attracts bands from Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming and Minnesota. The majority of competitive field bands from the region attend, and the lineup annually features approximately 20 bands. The contest is hosted by the USD Department of Music and the University Band Program.

The four classes of competition are separated into two divisions: 1A/2A and 3A/4A. Caption awards and placements are presented in all four classes, plus overall sweepstakes awards are presented for each division.
