(November 8-11, 2017, Indianapolis, Indiana)
A powerful presence from Texas bands and a large variety of props were hallmarks of the 2017
Bands of America Grand National Championships.
A total of 110 marching bands from 23 states gathered for the prestigious event, including a whopping 100 bands that competed in the two-day preliminaries. Thirty-seven bands advanced to semi-finals in a tight competition for 12 spots in the elite finals.
Six bands from Texas were on hand, with all six advancing to semi-finals and four advancing to finals. The crowd gave an especially warm reception to two bands that traveled from Hawaii.
Props and set pieces had a significant presence, including backdrops, tarps, field skirts, swings, pedal cars, a grand piano and even a platform featuring an ice skater.
Carmel H.S. (Indiana) earned the title of Grand National Champion for the second consecutive year. Dobyns-Bennett H.S. (Tennessee) surged to its highest finish ever (6th), and
Union H.S. (Oklahoma) was back in finals for the first time since 2011. Marching.com photographed bands throughout the week and presents here the 37 semi-finalist bands in order of appearance at semi-finals.
